A propulsion<br \/>\nsystem is a machine that produces\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grc.nasa.gov\/www\/k-12\/airplane\/thrust1.html\">thrust<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">\u00a0to push<br \/>\nan object forward. On airplanes, thrust is usually generated through some<br \/>\napplication of Newton&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grc.nasa.gov\/www\/k-12\/airplane\/newton3.html\">third law\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">of<br \/>\naction and reaction, and facilitated by Newton\u2019s second law, active on the<br \/>\nengine body. A gas, or\u00a0working<br \/>\nfluid, is accelerated by the engine, and the reaction to this acceleration<br \/>\nproduces a force on the engine. But it is not only the jet coming out at the<br \/>\nexhaust that creates thrust, but the entire body of the engine participates in<br \/>\ncreation of thrust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">Some aircrafts like fighter planes require very<br \/>\nhigh excess thrust to accelerate quickly and to overcome the high drag<br \/>\nassociated with high speeds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">This<br \/>\ncourse helps you understand basic construction and working operation of<br \/>\nturbojet, turbofan, turboshaft and turboprop engines and acquire knowledge of<br \/>\nelectronic engine control, engine indicating systems and ignition systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-us\" xml:lang=\"en-us\">During\u00a0the last 60 years, the development of<br \/>\ngas\u00a0turbine engines as propulsion systems for aircraft has been very fast.<br \/>\nThis evolution is illustrated by the<br \/>\nadvancement from propeller-driven aircraft to jet powered aircraft.<br \/>\nAdvancements in rocket propulsion have enabled us to launch vehicles into Earth<br \/>\norbit, to the Moon and other planets.
